Rural Land East of Chattanooga
Excavation contractors in Apison work in a rural census-designated place east of Chattanooga, spread over 16.19 square miles with only 4,428 residents (2020), about 274 per square mile, at roughly 860 feet. When the railroad came through in 1881 the stop was called O'Brian, then renamed Apison after large deposits of Apison shale were found along the tracks.
Shale in the ground
The town's name comes from the shale found along the railroad. Shale breaks into flat pieces that can be ripped with an excavator, but it slows trenching and does not make good bedding against pipe.
Rural land
With 1,648 housing units on 16 square miles, most properties are large. Clearing, long driveways, barn pads and septic systems are the work we do most.
Clay, shale and limestone
Besides shale, the valleys around Apison carry clay over limestone. The USDA describes Dewey soils in the region as red clay from limestone with sinks and depressions in some areas.
Septic everywhere
With rural lots, nearly every home relies on septic. We dig to approved designs and keep equipment off existing fields.
Creeks and runoff
The area gets about 55 inches of rain a year. Long driveways need culverts at every crossing and ditches to carry water.
New homes on old farms
New houses are going up on former farmland. Clearing fence rows, filling old gullies properly and building pads on firm ground are the common tasks.
Distance from town
Because Apison is spread out, hauling distance to disposal sites affects price more than it does in the city. We keep usable material on site where we can.
